Medicaid & long-term care planning in Colorado
Plan for long-term care, and help protect what you’ve worked for.
Nursing home and in-home care can cost far more than families expect. We help you plan years ahead with a Medicaid Asset Protection Trust, so your savings have time to clear the five-year look-back for Health First Colorado (Medicaid).

Is now the right time?
The best time to plan is before you need care.
Because of Medicaid’s five-year look-back, asset protection trusts work best when care is still years away.
Planning ahead
Care may be years away
Starting early gives your plan time to clear Medicaid’s five-year look-back, so more of your savings and home may be protected.

The five-year look-back
Why timing matters so much.
When you apply for long-term care Medicaid, the state reviews gifts and transfers made in the 60 months before. Transfers in that window can delay coverage. Planning that is completed before the window generally is not counted.
Before the window
- Assets moved into a properly drafted trust generally are not counted once five years have passed.
Inside the window
- Gifts or transfers for less than fair value may cause a penalty period before Medicaid begins paying for care.
Simplified for illustration. General information, not legal advice. Medicaid rules change and depend on your situation.
